Tjalf Sparnaay

TJALF & CINDY O.K. Harris Works of Art New York, represents Tjalf in the USA. O.K. Harris is a famous Art Gallery in Soho, among others representing important American hyperrealists as Ralph Goings and Robert Bechtle. Gallery owner Ivan Karp introduced in the sixties Roy Liechtenstein and Andy Warhol.

In London Sparnaay's work is exhibited and sold through Plus One Gallery.
In the Netherlands Collectie Harms Rolde represents him.

Tjalf paints on commission too, prices between 10,000 and 45,000 euro.

A lot of care goes into the technical aspects of the work. The canvas is Belgian portrait canvas, pure and strong. Although it comes prepared from the shop, I give it a good sanding and then prime it with two or four layers of gesso using a broad filling knife. The canvas has not yet been stretched and lies flat. It is then carefully sanded smooth with waterproof sandpaper. Once it is dry it is ready to be stretched, which has to be done very carefully. Then I apply a layer of coloured gesso to provide a base colour, usually grey ochre, and one or two layers of acrylic medium: this is to prevent the oil layer drying too quickly and going dull, as well as providing a surface on which it is easy to draw.

The final painting involves ‘filling in’ and developing the drawing— by far the most laborious part. When the picture is dry, glazes can be applied to deepen the colours or conversely to blend them. The whites are also brightened up. When the whole thing is completely dry, an intermediate varnish is applied and after a year, if necessary, a final varnish.

The paint I use is well-pigmented ‘Dutch tube oil paint’. It is applied with flat nylon brushes, and the stumping is done with squirrel hair.
The large continuous backgrounds are done with hog’s hair spalter brushes dipped in previously prepared sets of colours of different hues and tints.
